Roadside Breakfast. In Flushing.
Fu Yuan is a tiny window with a blue sign in the sea of similar “hole-in-the-wall” gems on Roosevelt Ave. We would have never noticed it if it wouldn’t be for the tip to look for the large bright orange Dunkin’ Donuts awning and a line at the window next to it.
There’s always a line at Fu Yuan — locals and tourists alike. They serve fresh made to order right in front of you steamed rice rolls, noodles, and soups. Once we got our turn at the window, the order took about five minutes.
Here’s our $12 catch: pork, shrimp, and watercress rolls, plus curry fish balls. We inhaled it at the table at the little playground on our way to the courts.
At the playground, Tom pointed to the sign on the fence: “No adults allowed unless accompanied by children.” We looked around. There was one little girl navigating a slide and, almost at every table, there were adults only leaning over the same containers with the same noodles. No one misbehaved so there were no problems.
